About

Onyx is a Nigerian-American freelance disciplinary creative and Designer (BFA ‘18) based in Chicago.

As a Costume Designer they are a visual storyteller using the medium of clothing to communicate character to an audience. Their practice is deeply rooted in historical, anthropologic and psychological research that is used in the ideation process to inform accurate, imaginative, and poignant concepts. In this work they explore how the costume serves as a conduit to transport an individual into a character. Their background in film & theatre has educated them in a thorough ideation, presentation and execution process that they translate into their art process as an art director.

As an Art Director they are interested in a highly collaborative process that results in thoughtful, representative, and avant garde exhibitions, images and campaigns. Their multicultural knowledge of global pop culture along with their background in a research based process allows them to effectively reach the targeted audience of whatever project they are working on.

Currently they have been exploring intersecting their gardening practice with their design practice as they shift and adjust to a new role as the Exhibit Specialist for Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance.

Onyx completed their BFA in Costume Design at DePaul University in 2018.
