About

Onyx Engobor is a multi-hypenate designer working across textiles, video, and gardening. Rooted in research and reverence, their work explores environmentalism through the lenses of biomimicry, ancestral memory, and our innate connection to the land. With a BFA in Costume Design, Onyx approaches creation as both study and ritual—investigating how textiles function as vessels of communication and carriers of story.

Drawing from traditions both inherited and intuitive, they engage with the earth as collaborator—processing natural dyes, growing materials, and integrating land-based knowledge into every thread. Their practice is a form of earth-centric world-building: a quiet but insistent invitation to remember, reimagine, and return.

Onyx is currently Manager of Exhibits & Interpretation at Garfield Park Conservatory & Gardens where the aim to promote the mission of changing lives through the power of nature.

Onyx completed their BFA in Costume Design at DePaul University in 2018.
